RedBull gives you Fronton

» Imagine if you walked to a near by stretch of coastline on a swell you'd usually fold on the spot you'd usually be happy surfing. Imagine you just happen to see a left and right peak that looked like it could hold on the up coming tide. Imagine if you just found a spot that could quite possibly be the best wave in the world. I wonder how the bodyboarder who found Fronton felt when he seen this place before anyone else. Fronton comp waiting period has already started, make should you see what goes down during this groundbreaking contest on RedBull's Webcast of the event.

Rippin' It Ol' School

» Now this really only applies to PSBC members but where hoping it could be bigger next year. One of the founding members of the club has a stock pile of old boards in his garage, ranging from early 90's Eppo boards to Shapes that are dated B.S (Before Slick). We ran our first Retro Show 2 years ago in perfect 3ft conditions, we saw a swagger of closet manoeuvres thrown down such as the Tom Carroll Inspired Re-entry and the ever popular prone floater. Obviously board selection was vital which is why we adopt a first in best serve format where the competitors fight it out on the beach at the beginning of each heat. Scoring is best 3 waves; a format all the old blokes will remember well and judges will be looking for knowledge of the early years in the rider's performance. This year's event is set, so zinc up and dust off those double hand cut backs because it begins 7am December 18th!

Nick Takes Pictures

» Nick is young, enthusiastic and represents a necessity to the documentation of this sport. It's not everyday a new photographer decides they'll spend all their efforts capturing great bodyboarding shots for the rest of us to flick through in the mags. I'm certain we'll be seeing more of his images pop up in the coming months. The shot above he took from land during Movements chopper shoot a few months back (the same wave that was run of me shot from Rod's angle in the sky). He has a page you can follow here. So Support the youth as they say.

Best and Fairest

» I thought about it today and I can distinctly remember a time when I had absolutely no idea how the Peer Poll worked or how it came about to inform me who my favourite riders thought were their favourite riders. It's a fairly simple concept, pro riders voting the best in a sequential order, not too dissimilar to the best and fairest awards in my under 12s football side and for that matter my U11s and U10s teams. Back then there were 3 awards given out to the lucky recipients at the end of each year, A most improved award handed to the player who usually had the growth spurt mid year and gained the balls to take down the Islander kid who had his spurt in kindergarten, then there was the best tackler. Both of these awards were seen to be far less honourable than the converted 'Best and Fairest' award, bestowed to the number 1 player on the team . During my three years spent playing Rugby League the same player earned the best and fairest every time, there was no doubting this kid's abilities, he was the fastest runner, played the most desirable position, hell he even had a mouth guard designed by his dentist (a far cry from my mouth piece which was moulded to my gums after going through the microwave for 30seconds).
Fast forward a few years and here I am reading Riptide Magazine each December thinking how the riders I looked up to find themselves with a number next the their name. Mike Stewart was the first, winning the admiration of his peers during the poll's first decade or so, then you have the rise of Hardy in the early 00s winning I think 7 off memory then followed Mitch, Ben and Winny during the more recent parts of the new millennium, 5 winners in total over more than 15 years. Bells should have rung when I was a young bodyboarder, this was exactly the same as Under 11s football, the same guy keeps winning!
It's the most effective process to determine the best. There's no denying a winner voted by his peers, it's usually so black and white that it comes as no surprise. Winny had a near perfect year in 09, no one could deny that and he won, and Hardy's poll domination was never questioned. This year I listed my favourites from 1 through to 20, and out of all those places choosing my number 1 was the easiest decision.
I won't bore you with my entire list, but I can confirm the rider above earned my vote for an associated category. ds

Titles Make Good Surf Flicks

» With absolutely no waves on the east coast this past week, I decided to try my hand at some basic motion graphics. I thought this test attempt was worth posting on the blog, not quite James Cameron yet, but it's a step in the right direction. ds

One Hundred Kay Winds

» Another magic little session at Boxy on the weekend, howling offshore and consisant wedging three footers. I kind of blew the south swell that followed but it didn't take long to forget about what I had missed when I saw at this picture from Saturday. Where to now?

14/10/10

Spring Cleaning

» It was due time i tidied this website up a little. You might notice a few things have changed on here, nothing drastic but needed none the less. You also might have noticed my young compadre from Nelson Bay Alan Chegwidden has landed himself a new sponsor and some movement website attention, the Bay is blowing up with little guy talent this past 18 months and I can't see things changing in the near future. Congrats Al, your one step closer to the peak at boxy mate haha. dall

Happy Monday

» Wipeout has got to be the best show going round, guaranteed laughs every episode. After the first season of the US version my room mate and I applied for the Australian version, we got the call up to a sydney studio where they told us we need to be available for 3 weeks during to following month for go to Argentina where the show is produced. Neither of us could manage the time to go, but it was a good thought.ds

Inverted Podcast The Second

» After Europe, and lets face it posting less than satisfying results in a few of the contests all I wanted to do is find my groove again in waves around the east coast, without three judges on the beach and without ratings points floating around in my mind. So this is what I came up with, 95% of the footage in the clip was taken over the week after the Knight beach contest in South Aus. Apologies for the amount of flips, I think I still couldn't shake off the effects of multiple tour stops. Rob Sherwood done a great edit, and looking forward to doing more of these clips with him in the coming months. Big thanks to Inverted, 4play, I Am None and Dunes for making the clip possible. Hope yawl like what you see.

This Month From Our Proud Sponsor

» This month's 4play add which features in Riptide this week is my favourite yet. It was the first time I'd ever tried to line up a fisheye shot at Boxy before and Rodeo absolutely nailed it here. It's a unique shot as this frame in a sequence like this is usually overwhelmed which spray and water droplets from the rail while tracking past the camera. Though this turned out, somehow, with no spray at all. Hope you guys like it. Dall.

Rod's Got Photo

» The first guy I ever wanted to shoot a photo with was Rod Owen. He was reachable from my small town in Port Stephens, he'd surfed all the same breaks I had while growing up, he was someone I knew was real and someone I looked up to. It just so happens I did get the chance to link that very first shot up with Rod, during a session at Pilots at the ripe age of seventeen, now nearly 10 years down the track he's become one of the most well rounded photographers in the surf industry and his back catalogue of work is a real testament to that. These images can be viewed on his new website here. Above is one of the most memorable shots that Rod has captured of myself of a wave that I been hooked on ever since. Enjoy, dall.

leBoogs Number Five

» The newest issue of leBoogie has just been released and after having a sneak peak myself it's well worth the calms to get on the leboogie website a grab a copy. Phil's dropped this clip to promote the issue, it's a lil' edgy just like the man himself. Well done on the number 5 guys, the salty seamen issue is out now! Dall.

I Hear You Buddy

» The descriptive tale of a bloke and an ocean obsession. Mickey uniquely explains how surfing captivates him and why he dedicates his days to such a lifestyle. I've never really thought about it in too much depth before now. A great short film, well worth a watch. dall

SIC Couple Of Weeks Back

» A sample of what happened at the Island comp this year. My girl Chelsea only really captured my heats and Ben's forward air, Hardy did end up winning. Yep, you heard it here first! dall.

E3 For Me

» For those of you who still hit this page I wish I had a prize or something to feed you, my updates this past month have been hopeless. In my defence I've been in Europe sluggin' it out in the hot Spanish sun, flipping for tour points for the past 3 weeks. A lot of Aussies struggle understand the significance in the Europe leg of the tour when they sit at home watching the best the sport has produced in less than ideal conditions, and the truth is 90% of the competitors could rip just the same in conditions a lot heavier and would rather do so. However there is a major challenge involved in progressing through heats in below par surf and there is a way to do it consistently, something I'm still trying to wrap my head around. My hat goes of to Amaury, the 2010 world champion, being the same age I've competed against him many times and watched as he's progressively fine tuned his 20 minute routine into a hard act to beat. He's a prime example of what a man can achieve if you dedicate yourself to a lifetime goal.

Two Hours at the Goo

» A short edit from the other morning at Canggu. There's a few foul one's in there but i thought it make for a cool clip on the website. It was also the first surf i had on the board Fish had shaped me up for Europe later this month, if your reading Fish, goes great mate thanks. The swell has disappeared again which is giving me plenty of time to barter the locals down on imitation products and work on my recumbent tan pose. Hope y'all enjoy, Dall.

This Morning's Effort

» I've been in Bali for a week now (which will explain the lack of post lately). This morning I managed to surf Canggu with a swell for the first time, somewhere I've wanted to surf good for ages. Although the swell was fresh and still a little messy there was still room for a couple of big dirty punts, I'll throw a short edit up on the site in the next couple of days of this morning's session. Selamat Jelan, Dall.

Move Over Oz Tour

» Port Stephens Bodyboard Club ran it's fifth round last weekend in some classic 2-3ft Boxy conditions. Highlights of the day was Alan Chegwidden's effort in the final which landed him and I in a count back situation for first and second (Unfortunatly falling just short of the win, hehe), Nick Shaw's big step up to the double A division and Tahnee's bare foot kickflip in the carpark.

Doin' Flips And Makin' Clips

» School holidays is epic because the groms at box are always keen to man the lens on average days. Two weeks ago saw 2-3ft of swell spill through boxy with some ok conditions in between horrible rain and gusty SE'ters. Two surfs later and this clip happened.

Le Boogs, Issue 4

» New LeBoogie is available this week online and in bodyboard stores across the nation. Personally it’s awesome this see this mag in it’s 4th edition and now officially one year old. I was lucky enough to be apart of a trip for issue one and at the time LeBoogie was just a concept with a lot of support, now it’s continued to grow into one the premier bodyboarding rags in the world. The photo above is from that same trip a little over a year ago, a shot I froth out on occasionally. Get your mits on number 4 here, and see what everyone’s been talking about.

A Highway Of My Own

» Driving back down the coast from Byron Bay yesterday I couldn’t ignore one of the most amazing sunsets I’ve seen out of my car window. A short refreshing stop in one of those little highway towns was a perfect opportunity to capture this colourful image of a perfect east coast sunset.

30/6/10

My Way Or The Highway

» Have a click through the new site from Thom & Kates. Thom mentioned to me a few times that he’d love a site to filter out thoughts and images, so it will come at no surprise that this blog will have plenty of interesting banter to fill that void in your day between getting dressed and leaving for work or waking up late and checking the surf.

21/6/10

That Folder Named Photos, Part 1

» Every bodyboarder has one. A little time capsule of sessions past, Jpegs that remind you why you’re riding a rectangular piece of packing foam. My folder has built up nicely over the past few years so I thought I might share a few with you. The first of which is a shot taken by Ryan Keats, A guy I didn’t get to shoot with that much, but when we did manage somehow we always got something worth a second look. A boxy day probably 2 years ago now, 4-5 foot not quite good enough for print but well worth a spot in the archive folder.

16/6/10

Farrrking Hell.

» Well the Teams Challenge was run and won again in Port Macquarie over the weekend with the honours going to a well-rounded Port Mac side that looked hard to beat from the very beginning. Our young Port Stephens team ran in 6th place (or third last, which ever way you want to look at it), too many good times and 4th places got in the road of PSBC glory. Next year we hope to turns things around and win the cheque so that we can offer end of year prizes to our poor bunch of orphan competitors. Wade Masters was one competitor who didn’t exactly peak in his heats during the contest but man did he do a good job with this 4ft Boxy ramp last month. Incredible stuff. Enjoy, Dall.

Book of Eli

» If you ever seen the film, then you’ll already have a general idea of what to expect from the Peruvian landscape, well at least this part of it anyway. Chilca beach is a place a little north of frequent UFO sightings and a touch south of the biggest cocaine hub in the world; fondly enough bodyboarding is a big deal in these parts, which is why IBA is running the third regionally sanctioned event here. Chilca is a prick of a wave, unpredictable, cold and frustrating as hell. Although at the same time the world’s best have been, again, tearing the place to bits. This contest will be a lot different to the last, but I doubt it will lack any of excitement the previous round produced. Check it out on the net, or ask your mate who won next week, Dall.

Arica Two Thousand Ten

» I’m going to be really lazy and send you over to the Riptide site where I’ve been helping out as an unofficial reporter while I’m over here in South America for the IBA tour events. I will keep things flowing here after I get past my sero contest game face stage. So stay tuned there will be plenty more photos from my picture box straight to your computer screen in the coming days. Buenos dias seniors’, Dall.

Little Fun One

» A fun little right reels past a young PSBC competitor. Seems as though some of the local bay talent is making a stir with a couple of classy clips floating around the net lately. Tarnee & Allan are two names that I hope you’ll be hearing more of in the coming years, I’ve watched them grow from twerps to tearers over the past couple of years and they dont seem to be slowing any. You can see what they can do here and what they cant do here.

4/5/10

White Is The New Black.

» Above is an artist impression of what my first 4play signature leash will look like when it hits the shelves in coming months. It features tight coils so that your leash doesn’t get in the way during bottom turning, a super smooth swivel that saves you hours of stress unravelling annoying knots, a 4play logo so that you friends at the beach can tell you know what’s up and a custom white colour way carefully selected by yours truly to match any of today’s fresh board colour combos. At a price that I don't yet know, It's bound to be a steal!

Reflections

» I’d just like to thank you guys, the readers, for deciding to make this little boogie Blog a success. Since the beginning I’ve had my team at Google Analytics tracking your every hit and page view, and today dallassinger.com cracked the 10 thousand unique viewer mark. In a way it makes me realise how big the bodyboarding community is in this world, and that my years blowing off social events and important engagements for waves have today payed off, because now I write stuff that people actually want to read (even though I do make the occasional spelling error). Thanks again, Dall.com.

Spin In, Flip Out

» Been fluffin’ around WA during the past week. Seen as the reports showed anything but rideable waves in the East I decided to head over and score some frosty morning sessions with some of the Margie Boys. I discovered two things during my stay in the not so Deep South. Firstly paddling into The Right is now apparently ‘Mellow’ and secondly, schools of sharks feeding in the Box line up are also considered ‘Mellow’. Had some sweet times and got some great waves, looking forward to getting back there again soon. Pictured is an almost there North Point at 6:05am.

"When Doesn't Mike Ever Have A Killer Day?"

» The guy’s responsible for all the bodyboarding blogs, magazines, bio flicks and the rest. Mike showed everyone that they too could ride a bodyboard and how it should be done. An innovator and a perfectionist, but most of all- the world’s most dedicated bodyboarder. Queensland April, 2010.

Calamari Board Art

» New board logo for my 2010 model rides. I posted a sketch of the logo a few months back and you could probably tell that the end result is a built up design that uses that initial idea. What truly inspired the octopus was a film I saw around the time I was thinking up concepts for the logo, ‘Mega Shark VS Giant Octopus’. A completely ridiculous story about two massive beast of the sea who are fighting for top dog supremacy, just so happens the US army are roped into the battle after Mega Shark decides to start launching itself at over head commercial aeroplanes and eating the wreckage. I don’t want to ruin the ending for you guys but things do get ugly and America does win in the end. 2010/11 4Play board range hitting retail floors soon. Dall..

PSBC, Round Two Turning On For Easter

» Round 2 of the 'best dam bodyboard club in the world' was held in perfect wedgey conditions at Box Beach last week. The standouts were undoubtedly the two new power-houses out of the Bay, Allan Chegwidden and Tarnee Sams. Both placing 2nd and 3rd respectively at the end of competition, sorry boys you’ve still yet to take down the old dude. Enjoy the 'cute/sketchy' highlight reel, dall.

Getz, Awarded Number One Car For Teenage Girls

» Spent some hours on the road this past week. Heading north on the highway has always been such a cool trip to do, the water gets that little bit warmer, the air seems a little cleaner and there’s always plenty time spent in the water. The first round of the Aus tour was run and won, watching a Japanese tourist school the majority of the world’s best in 2ft waves was hard to explain to friends who weren’t there to see for themselves. Novy and I spent $45 each way for petrol as the new Hyundai Getz proves it’s paying for it self already, above a shot of a dreary eyed Cyclone behind the wheel somewhere between Crowdy Head and Old Bar.

This Week's Glossies

» Le Phil will be dropping the third issue of Le Boogie Magazine this time next week. This little promo clip had my cursor hovering over the buy now link on the Le boogie website in no time at all. Looks as though bodyboarders in Aus are going to be served an Easter treat with what looks to be 3 fresh magazines releasing in the exact same week. Love a good read, dall.

Gravestone NYC

Reflecting in Brooklyn

» A lecturer once said to me, ”A photograph can never be made perfect in post, it must happen the moment your finger presses the trigger.”

Those words rang true to me after thinking the computer was the answer to all my problems when the image I wanted looked far from perfect. The truth is computers aren’t the answer, but a tool, to push out everything that photo has to offer. This one of my most popular/best looking subject. Anit no waves either, dall.

Not Quite What Was Expected

» The ol' local didn't switch on as predicted but there was still something there for the little bodyboard club that could, PSBC. Well done to Tarnee and Alan for taking charge in the AAA division, showing the old farts hows it's done.
